Thank You!
I hope you all are enjoying a wonderful summer with your families. I miss the kids so much already! I want to thank all of you for the generous class gift. I used every one of those gift cards to treat myself to several spa treatments on my recent vacation to San Diego. It was heavenly!!! Thank you also to Leigh and the other parents who coordinated our last day picnic in the park. It was a beautiful day!

Last K News 6/5/09!
Happy summer everyone! I cannot believe how quickly this year has flown by!
Thank you all for your support and participation. I am very proud of this class and will miss them so much. My summer plans include reading a lot of books and a southern California trip with our extended family the week after school gets out- Lego Land, here I come! I'll also be heading out to my aunt and uncle's farm in Wisconsin so my daughter can spend some quality time with their cows, horses, and lots of cats!
What's New in K2:
Riley was our Star Student this week. Katie will be our last Star Student next week!
We enjoyed the assembly on Wednesday about heroes. We're getting in a lot of rehearsals for our upcoming performance!
The week coming up:
Monday 6/8- Regular schedule. We're looking forward to seeing you at our performance on Monday- please send your child to school already dressed in costume. After dropping them off at our gate, please go directly to Room 21- the last portable on the upper yard. The performance is scheduled to begin at 11:40 and lasts approximately half an hour.
Tuesday 6/9- Regular schedule.
Wednesday 6/10- Field Day- All kindergartners 8:05-11:30 AM. Please remember to dress comfortably, pack a healthy snack, and wear sunscreen and sneakers!
Thursday 6/11- Last day of school- All kindergartners 8:05-11:30AM. Please do not send snacks or backpacks with your child unless they go to daycare after school. We'll watch the Fifth Grade vs. Rancho Staff softball game (can I have a parent volunteer to supervise the class so I can play?) then head over to the park for snacks (provided) and play time- thank you Room Parents for coordinating this! Please join us there at 10:30. Park rules- Stay out of the creek and off the hillside, only go in the water play area if your parent is present and has given permission. ***Remember to check out with me by 11:15 to say goodbye and receive your child's report card!***
Friday 6/12- Teacher work day- if anything got lost/forgotten in the park or classroom (jackets, backpacks, whatever), I'll be here for a short period in the morning.
Keep up with reading over the summer! I am thrilled at the reading levels this class has achieved. Some reading suggestions as your child continues to progress:
-go from short vowel books to books with more long vowel/sight words (eg. "My First I Can Read"- Biscuit series, "Ready to Read" Level 1)
-"I Can Read" Level 1 (eg. Danny & the Dinosaur, Morris the Moose)
-"I Can Read" Level 2 (eg. Amelia Bedelia, Frog and Toad, Little Bear, Fox and Friends)
-"Ready to Read" Level 2 (eg. Henry & Mudge, Poppleton, Mr. Putter and Tabby series)
-beg. chapter books (eg. Magic tree House, Nate the Great, Butterfly Meadow)

What's New in K2!
Jack is our Star Student this week!
We've been reading several versions of The Little Red Hen this week and we baked Irish Soda bread in centers. I've sent home a slice of the loaf your child made with his/her center group- the recipe is in today's Friday folder.
Our green bean plants are growing well. The students are learning to give their plants just the right amount of water. Be ready to transplant the seedlings to a larger container/growing area when they come home. It's fun for kids to pick green beans right off the plant during the summer.
We've wrapped up our units from both the Math and Social Studies curriculum, but we're continuing to do a lot of hands-on practice of the concepts. Remember to continue making connections to your child's learning throughout the summer. Make up number stories to practice adding and subtracting. Children can write letters or send postcards to friends and family. Many children enjoy writing creative stories and illustrating them. Enjoy the charm of their phonetic writing now- they'll be introduced to many regular/irregular spelling patterns in first grade.
Next week is our LAST week of centers! We will not do centers the last week of school. A huge thank you to all the parents who helped with centers this year! Your participation in our program means so much to me, your child, and all our students!
Please return any outstanding library books and reading books/logs. I will not be sending new readers home next week.
Do you have some cooking/baking items (baking sheets, bowls, whisks, spoons, spatulas) we can borrow for props in our musical? We can also use some toy tools (measuring tapes, hammers, saws, levels)- please be sure to label items so we can return them to you after our performance.
We will not be sending Friday folders home during the last week of school. Because of this, your child's projects, work, and workbooks will be coming home this week or next. (I could use some brown handled grocery bags if you have some!) You may have observed that I prefer to do hands-on projects and writing practice that integrates several curriculum areas. As a result, you will find that there are large chunks of our workbooks that have not been completed in class- feel free to use these for occasional review/skills practice over the summer.
Regarding the last day of school, please send in your child's permission slip so that he/she can participate in our end of year picnic/play day at Arroyo Avichi park. Even though the park is just next door, it is still off-campus and I need permission slips signed! Also, I will assume that I will see you at the park to join us/pick up your child/give you report cards unless you let me know otherwise. It would be helpful to have a note from you if your child will be going to daycare or if you (or your carpool) will be picking up your child at the gate. Lastly, our rule at the park is that no child may play in the water "fountain" unless you are present and they have your specific permission at that time.

What's New in K2!
Jordan is our Star student! Sara was the winner of the Spring Fling Auction item and was Teacher for the Day!
In science, we reviewed the seasons, we're wrapping up insects and had a presentation about mosquitoes, and we began our new unit on seeds and planting. In Lang. Arts, we write about things we've learned in our science studies.
This week, we had some terrific presenters for Career Day. We also had an Art Docent presentation.
